The MAX5946LETX+ is a Hot Swap Controller IC from Maxim Integrated and it works to mitigate the risks associated with existing Hot Swap solutions.

Features

The MAX5946LETX+ is a four terminal Hot Swap controller IC and features a 2A N-channel MOSFET along with thermal protection, decreased power dissipation, low turn-on resistance and a low dropout voltage. Its on-chip reverse current protection prevents current from being discharged into the power source when supplying power to the system in the reverse direction. The MAX5946LETX+ also has over-temperature and over-voltage protection and provides complete protection against Hot Swap fault conditions.

Working Principle

The MAX5946LETX+ Hot Swap controller is a four-terminal chip which is designed to safely insert and remove power sources. When a power source is inserted or removed, the MAX5946LETX+ monitors the input voltage and current and provides a controlled current load to the system while ensuring the safe operation of the Hot Swap circuit. It contains an integrated reverse current protection switch which prevents current from flowing into the power source. The Hot Swap controller also features over-temperature, over current and over voltage protection circuits.

The MAX5946LETX+ Hot Swap controller also features a select pin, an inhibit pin and a Manual Activate pin. When the select pin is connected to ground, the Hot Swap Controller will automatically detect the presence of a power source and activate the circuit. The Manual Activate pin allows the user to manually activate the circuit. The inhibit pin is used to disable the Hot Swap circuit when a power source is not connected.
