PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers

The high performance MAX5959AECS+ hot swap controllers is a product family of advanced mixed-signal power management integrated circuits (PMICs). It includes the MAX5959AECS+, MAX5959AECS, MAX5959AECS-EX and four variants of the MAX5959AECS+. These devices are designed to manage power safely and efficiently from multiple sources in distributed power architectures, such as those commonly found in enterprise class computing, telecommunications, and cloud computing applications.

The MAX5959AECS+ hot swap controllers provide high performance and flexibility for distributed power architectures and advanced power management. Advanced features of the MAX5959AECS+ include auto power-up and power-down sequencing, real-time current monitoring, and protection against hot insertion and thermal overstress. Hot swap controllers can also monitor the health of a system, detect errors, and perform management functions such as power-cycling through software control.

Working Principle

The MAX5959AECS+ hot swap controller family\'s operation is based on a shared voltage source connected between +VIN and -VINDST. The shared source supplies the power to an entire system of components with the hot swap controller providing control signals to the PC board components enabling orderly startup and shutdown of the power supply circuits. The controller monitors the sense voltage of the power supply, between EN/SNS and -VINDST. When the sense voltage VEN/SNS rises above the lower threshold voltage VLO, the controller sends an enable signal to the components connected to the VIN and -VIN lines, allowing the power supply circuit to power up. If the VEN/SNS is above the upper threshold voltage VHI, the controller sends a disable signal, which forces the power supply circuit to shut down.

The MAX5959AECS+\'s overvoltage protection feature provides an enhanced level of protection by monitoring the input voltage (VIN) and shutting down the power supply if the voltage rises to a dangerous level. The MAX5959AECS+ also includes two comparators for monitoring the VCC supply voltage, along with temperature sensing and fault detection features. The device\'s low power operation is enabled by its ultra-low quiescent current and built-in power saving features, such as its sleep mode.
