The MAX5963UTL+ is a Hot Swap controller from PMIC, designed for backplane and card-edge applications. It allows the card-edge to efficiently control the voltage & current levels in the power rail during insertion and removal, thus protecting the card and system from draw current transients.
The MAX5963UTL+ is capable of operating with one or two n-channel MOSFETs, controlling up to 15A and 44V. This device is complementary to the MAX5964UTL+ backplane controllers and provides the same essentials features in a card-edge package.
The MAX5963UTL+ has two power pins, including a low volt rail to power logic functions and thermostatic protections. This device includes many features such as power monitoring (rail voltage and current or power), two channels of independent thermal protection, manual reset input, current limit/power signaling, delay after power/reset signals to guarantee a steady power-on condition and a PROM-programmable 6-bit ADC.
In a system, the MAX5963UTL+ is used to protect both a hot-swap card and a system from stress during insertion and removal. It does this by controlling inrush current, provide a sequence for safe compartment power-up and ensure proper removal of power from the card. During insertion, the MAX5963UTL+ monitors the external circuitry and if the voltage from the system is at an acceptable level, the controller will allow current to be safely supplied to the card/system. When the card is removed from the system, the controller will ensure a safe disconnection of power from the card. When power is removed, the controller will also provide a reset signal in order to disconnect power from the system board.
The MAX5963UTL+ includes protection features such as fault detection, protection, reset control and power control. The Fault input pin is used to detect any fault conditions, such as an over voltage, over current or thermal overload. When a faulty condition is detected, the output will be switched off, thus protecting the system/card from any damage. The protection feature has two levels and is adjustable by external resistors.
