The MAX5978ETJ+ is an I2C interfaced Hot Swap Controller that provides automatic load current monitoring, fault detection, and power sequencing for hot-pluggable loads. Working Principle

The MAX5978ETJ+ operates with a differential current-sense circuit that is connected between the power sources and the load. When power is applied, the controller will unlock the gates of MOSFETs that connects to the load and will ramp up the current to the peak power-on current limit. Its differential sensing feature allows the controller to monitor both positive and negative current. Once the power-up is completed, the reference current control loop of the device adjusts the MOSFETs gate-drive voltage to precisely regulate the current draw.

The signals are filtered with high-frequency RC networks and routed to the I2C/CMOS/LVTTL compatible logic outputs. Thus it achieves power sequencing, Automatic power-on current limit, and input voltage and current protection. The precise current regulation is combined with temperature compensation and UVLO that allows precise current regulation during power-up, power-down, and short-term inrush loads.

The precise current regulation can be used to monitor the current and in respect to the reference current level, the device can enter a fault condition that can be used to identify any operate/hardware failures. The user can program the device with the I2C interface.
