MAX786CAI+T is an innovative power management integrated circuit (PMIC) that is specially designed for linear or switching voltage regulation applications. This highly integrated solution provides an ideal cost and space saving choice for various end-devices requiring voltage regulation, and is particularly useful in applications which must meet stringent power requirements, such as electronic devices running at higher speeds, and those that use large amounts of power.

The MAX786CAI+T integrates adjustable and fixed-mode linear regulators, and additionally, it provides protection features and pulse-width modulated (PWM) controllers in a single package. The voltage regulator also features on-chip power management logic, making it suitable for wide-ranging applications such as motor drives, communications, computing and medical systems, automotive and industrial automation equipment, and more.

The working principle of the MAX786CAI+T is based on linear or switching operation. The power supply under regulation is compared with an internal bandgap voltage reference, and any deviations from the reference level are regulated in accordance with the programmed voltage and current levels. The voltage regulation is based on a feedback loop that adjusts the output of the regulator to regulate the supply voltage close to the desired output level.

Under linear regulation, the voltage reference is compared to the output voltage and the difference (error voltage) is amplified by the error amplifier and passed to the output stage which adjusts the output voltage appropriately. The integral of the error voltage is integrated, and when the value reaches the maximum, the output voltage is adjusted so that the error voltage reduces to zero. This mechanism is known as the ‘maximum error charge’.

When using PWM control, the output voltage of the voltage regulator is adjusted to the desired level by implementing a control loop based on the averaged error between the output voltage and the reference voltage. The averaged error is used to pulse width modulate the output voltage, and the output voltage is held at its set level.In addition to its basic functionalities, the MAX786CAI+T features a range of protection features to ensure device and system protection. The integrated short circuit protection, over current protection, and thermal protection functions help provide reliable system operation in a wide range of applications.
