The MAX817LCUA+T is a precision voltage supervisor for embedded systems and portable applications. It is designed to detect almost any undervoltage or overvoltage conditions in an embedded system and to provide an indication signal. The MAX817LCUA+T is ideal for supervisor and monitoring applications in which accuracy and low current consumption are essential.
The MAX817LCUA+T is classified as a PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) – Supervisors, intending to monitor and protect system power and provide a reset signal when the power situation deviates from pre-defined thresholds. Voltage detection accuracy is -1.5% (±1.5%) of the trip point, while power consumption can be as low as 1.2µA in normal operation or 0.85µA in low current mode.
The MAX817LCUA+T is an excellent choice for applications such as microprocessors, battery applications, power supplies, CBUS and AC77 power systems, as well as for portable applications.
This device has a variety of features, including 2 reset output pins (RESET1 and RESET2) which can be set to different thresholds, or enabled together and set to the same threshold;a power-on reset (POR) output pin which can be independently programmed to assert reset at application power-on, and a watchdog reset (WDR) pin which can provide periodic resets at a user-defined interval. Additionally, the MAX817LCUA+T also features an open drain comparator output (ALERT), a selectable power-on reset delay, an adjustable LED Drive and a RESET push-pull configuration option. The SINK pin can be used to override the default reset polarity, while the RESET active time can be adjusted using the external capacitor (C_TIME) connected to the TIME pin.
The MAX817LCUA+T also features a manual reset input (MR), which allows for a manual override of the reset signal, as well as a dedicated pin for power-on indication (PWRDN). Additionally, there is an integrated low battery detect circuit which offers a hysteresis-controlled comparator with user-programmable thresholds, a 100ms delay and an offset of up to 0.3V. The MAX817LCUA+T can also be configured for operation in a 2-wire or 3-wire interface.
The working principle of the MAX817LCUA+T is fairly straightforward. The device continuously monitors the voltage of the power supply and compares it with a user-programmable trip point. If the power supply voltage drops below the specified trip point, the device asserts a reset signal. Likewise, if the supply voltage exceeds the specified trip point, the device asserts a reset signal. Additionally, the device has a watchdog reset (WDR) pin that can be used to generate periodic reset signals at user-defined intervals, as well as a power-on reset (POR) output pin that can be programmed to assert reset during application power-on.
