The MAX8688BLETG+ is a fully integrated, high-efficiency, ultra-high-current buck regulator for mobile applications such as notebook PCs and tablets. This power management integrated circuit (PMIC) is designed to deliver superior power conversion efficiency and dynamic control for systems operating from very low to high supply voltages, reducing the need for external components and overall system design complexity. Developed on a proprietary CMOS process, the MAX8688BLETG+ utilises an advanced dynamic voltage control loop to tightly regulate high current outputs while achieving low quiescent current must-jitter precision PLL. This advanced PLL architecture enables the buck regulator to operate over a wider range of ambient temperatures and significantly improves the start-up and fast response performance compared to conventional products.

Maxim claims it to be the highest current, lowest quiescent current buck regulator in the industry. The other main features include multiple synchronous boost current path outputs,mixed mode power conversion control, low active and standby current operability,and adjustable current output limit.

In general, this PMIC offers a perfect application field for mobile and lighting applications. The use of a single-inductor dual-output buck-converter architecturereduces space and complexity, while providing ultra-high-current operation within a compact and cost-effective design. This makes the MAX8688BLETG+ suitable for supplying high power from a single rail. It is also perfectly capable of providing multiple independant power paths on its single output, with each path having its own current limit.

An integrated PLL allows for multi-phase operation for improved efficiency and amplitude stability over temperature and operating conditions, withspread-spectrum lessening EMI emissions. Additionally, the step-down buck-converter architecture provides plentiful power conversion capability to operate in any voltage range. It supports up to 8V, 18V, and 24V output voltages, with low power dissipation and low output ripple.

The MAX8688BLETG+ employs an advanced control loop design to provide superior load line management. By optimising the control loop gain, the output voltage stability is improved and the inductor, output capacitor, and input capacitor stresses are minimised. This improves the regulator\'s stability and eliminates the need for expensive additional components. The output ripple is reduced to a minimum when an appropriate output capacitance is used. Combined with its flexible user configurable settings, the MAX8688BLETG+ enables users to select a single Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) solution for a range of power delivery applications.

When operating in high frequency operation, the regulator control loop gain is increased, thus providing improved small-signal operation and lowered output voltage ripple. Combined with phase-lock loop’s synchronous buck-converter design, static and dynamic accuracy within ±1% over temperature is possible.

The MAX8688BLETG+ enables users to optimise their power system design while allowing them to maintain their maximum design margin. The extensive features of this PMIC allow designers to achieve higher efficiency and improve system performance and features such as wide current operation range, low noise, negligible quiescent current,multi-phase operation and a step-down buck-converter enables designers to reduce the number of external components and to employ shorter wires and PCB trace lengths.

The MAX8688BLETG+ device provides a high current buck-conversion solution for high power PMIC applications such as micro servers, graphics cards, networking routers, telecommunication base stations, consumer electronics, and many other applications.
