The MAX8840ELT18+T Voltage Regulator is a linear-type voltage regulator that provides superior performance in power management, especially in applications requiring good power-supply stability and low noise. It offers a wide input voltage range, and is designed to provide a regulated output voltage over a wide input voltage range. The MAX8840ELT18+T is the first voltage regulator to offer the ability to regulate input power down to zero over the complete input voltage range. This capability makes it ideal for applications that require dynamic voltage scaling and/or power-supply sequencing.
The MAX8840ELT18+T provides an adjustable output voltage up to 20 V. It has an internal reference voltage of about 1.65 V and can easily be adjusted for output voltages as low as 0.6 V. The output is stable and does not require any external components. The MAX8840ELT18+T is not limited to a fixed voltage range and can be adjusted for different output voltages over the entire input voltage range. It can also be used as a low-dropout regulator because of its low output voltage variation.
The MAX8840ELT18+T uses bipolar transistors to control the output voltage. The output transistor is controlled by the internal reference voltage. Two outer control transistors regulate the current in the active region of the transistor. The current can be controlled by changing the compensation resistance. This arrangment provides excellent stability and noise performance. The output voltage of the MAX8840ELT18+T is adjustable by applying differential control to the gate and source of the output transistor.
The MAX8840ELT18+T provides fast transient response and high power-supply rejection ratio (PSRR). The on-chip high-speed compensation allows for fast settling times, reducing output voltage overshoot and undershoot. The MAX8840ELT18+T also offers excellent line regulation, which can be further improved by using a voltage divider on the output transistor. The high-efficiency power supply design enables increased energy efficiency and lower power consumption.
The MAX8840ELT18+T has low output voltage noise and is designed for a wide variety of applications requiring regulated output voltages, including personal computers, workstations, PDAs, digital media players and mobile phones. It is also well-suited for applications requiring noisy or unstable power supplies such as power amplifiers and RF transceivers, where the low output voltage noise helps to reduce system noise. Due to its low power consumption, the MAX8840ELT18+T is also suitable for battery-powered applications or embedded systems.
