Clock/Timing - Clock Buffers, Drivers have been the cornerstone of electrical engineering since the invention of the cycle. A clock buffer, also known as a clock driver, is a semiconductor device used to amplify and distribute a clock signal to multiple output devices. The MC10LVEP11DR2 is a Low Voltage Emitter-Coupled Logic (LVECL) Clock Buffer or Clock Driver from ON Semiconductor. It is designed for applications that require clock signal routing, amplification and/or fan-out.
The MC10LVEP11DR2 is a logic buffer that provides the appropriate waveform characteristics and squared-off rising and falling edges for high frequency, low voltage applications. It is designed for operation with a maximum supply voltage of 4.75V and a maximum supply current of 32mA. The device features very low propagation delay and is able to drive loads up to 35 ohms. The MC10LVEP11DR2 is ideal for applications where low voltage and higher speed is desired such as computer buses, cellphones, and digital signal processing.
The device is composed of an input circuit, multiple blocks of open-collector drivers, and output circuitry. The input circuit includes an array of 1-bit comparators connected in a dual rail-to-rail configuration. The comparator array serves to convert a varying input voltage into a series of discrete high and low states. The open-collector drivers then take the high/low signal from the input circuit and drive the outputs in a push-pull configuration. The device features inverted outputs that allow for further signal inversion, if needed.
The MC10LVEP11DR2 is able to achieve excellent efficiency and speed due to the open-collector drivers and the dual rail-to-rail comparator array. Due to its high speed, this device is capable of driving 50MHz and higher clock cycles without distortion. This makes it ideal for applications such as HDTV, Power over Ethernet (PoE) and A/D and D/A converters. Additionally, the device also features low power consumption and supports hot swapping.
