MC14504B family is an octal bidirectional translator system with two independent translation directions. It consists of a logic section and appropriate steering networks. This is used to facilitate the communication between circuits operating at different logic system voltages. It has two separate direction control pins (1SET, 1RESET); with the active low enable control pin, the user is able to select the direction of information flow between LS (low-level system) and HS (high-level system). The MC14504B devices are able to support both source and sink of current.
The MC14504B family provides bidirectional conversions between the logical levels of two different logic systems. The logic level for LS and HS systems are based on user input. The two logical levels associated with silicon technology CMOS are compatible with C-MOS logic. The LS input voltage (VI) shall not exceed 0.8V while the high-level input voltage (VOH) shall not exceed 5.5V. The LS output voltage (QO) should remain below 0.4V while the high-out voltage (VOH) shall remain above 4.5V. The device itself consumes only a minimal power.
The operational principle of the MC14504B is based on the translation control logic. A logic low signal on the 1SET input provides a path between the LS and HS logical levels, thereby allowing for information flow from the LS to HS to take place. Conversely, a logic low signal on the 1RESET input provides a path between the HS to LS logical levels, allowing for information flow from the HS to LS to take place. When both the 1SET and 1RESET inputs are set to a logic high, the LS and HS logical levels are disconnected, isolating the two systems.
The functional block diagram of the MC14504B is shown in Fig.1. The LS logic buffers (U1 to U8) and the HS logic buffers (U9 to U16) receive the eight-bit data (D0 to D7) on their inputs. The 1SET and 1RESET logic inputs, which control the logic system direction, are buffered by 1SET and 1RESET gates, U17 and U18. A logic low on the 1SET input provides a path for the LS data, D0 to D7, to drive the HS data, QO to Q7, via the steerable switches U19 to U26.
Similarly, a logic low on the 1RESET input provides a path for the HS data, Q0 to Q7, to drive the LS data, D0 to D7, via the steerable switches U27 to U34. When both the 1SET and 1RESET inputs are logic high, all the switch ways in the MC14504BI are open, thereby isolating the LS input data, D0 to D7 and the HS input data, Q0 to Q7.
The MC14504B family of translators has many different applications in digital systems. These devices can be used in situations where a LS logic circuit needs to communicate with a HS logic circuit, such as in microprocessor interfaces, port expanders and serial communicators. They are also commonly used in level shifting of input-output interfaces and other integrated circuits, LED lighting systems and other backplane applications.
The MC14504B family provides a simple translation mechanism between LS and HS logic systems and can accommodate 8-bit data. This device is a versatile solution for translating between the various logic levels under various conditions.
