MC33340D Application Field and Working Principle

MC33340D belongs to the PMIC – Battery Chargers family and is a cost-effective single cell Li-Ion/Li-Pol battery charger integrated circuit (IC). It is designed to charge a single cell Li-Ion/Li-Pol battery with a constant current/constant voltage (CC/CV) algorithm.

MC33340D is capable of charging a single cell battery with a current of up to 1A, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. It is also integrated with a built-in safety timer, thermal regulation, and other safety features, providing a secure and reliable battery charging solution.

The working principle of MC33340D is as follows. When the battery is connected to the output of the IC, the MC33340D will automatically identify the battery type and use the correct charge algorithm. When the battery is connected, the IC will start the trickle charge process to ensure the battery is adequately charged before beginning the fast charging process.

If the voltage of the battery is below the set threshold, a soft-start voltage will be applied so that the battery is not overcharged. Once the battery has reached the threshold voltage, the fast charging process will begin. During this process, the IC will monitor the battery voltage and charge current. When the voltage and current reach their required threshold values, the IC will switch into the boost phase and the termination phase of the charge cycle.

At the end of the boost phase and after the termination phase, the IC will switch to the trickle charge phase, in which the charge current is reduced. This will keep the battery charged until it is disconnected from the MC33340D. If the battery is not removed, the process will keep repeating indefinitely.
