The MC3488ADR2G is an industry-standard, quad channel, low-voltage, low-power, differential-line transceiver intended for use in face-to-face communications over balanced twisted pair lines. This device provides the interface between TTL logic circuitry and the line driver and receiver circuitry required to drive and regenerate data signals connected to the balanced phone line. It operates in the V.11, V.22, V.22bis, V.23, V.32, V.32bis, V.34 and other data communications standards, as well as in V.22 Bell 103 applications. Operating supply voltage is +3V to +15V and the output voltage swing is +3V to +12V. Its quiescent power dissipation is typically below 10 mW per channel.

The MC3488ADR2G is mainly used for low voltage communication interface. The MC3488ADR2G consists of four driver channels and four receiver channels physical interface circuits. It is an EIA/CCITT-standard transmitter and receiver line interface unit that meets the requirements of both Balanced Mode and Unbalanced Mode communications. The four driver outputs are balanced to minimize common mode noise. Control of the driver outputs is provided by the TTL logic-level input signals.

The MC3488ADR2G\'s driver output stages are controlled by five levels of supplied voltage. This voltage is typically provided by the control TTL inputs and can be determined by the supply voltage VCC. When the control input is low (0V to 0.8V), the output drives low (0V to 0.3V). When the control input is high (2V to VCC), the output drivers high (VCC-0.3V to VCC). Here, the output can be modified below the standard TTL levels. Internal functions also provide battery feed and line termination.

The receiver inputs are protected from overload and reversed polarity voltage, allowing the input line to be shorted to ground or tied to +12V without damaging the part. The unique design of the receiver input stage of the MC3488ADR2G eliminates the need for large external components, making it possible to operate with a single +3V supply, in some cases. The receiver outputs operate in both positive, negative and open-collector outputs for flexibility. It has a signal detect output that provides an indication when the data signal is in the valid region. It has a low-power sleep mode for battery life conservation and has thermal protection.

The MC3488ADR2G is used in a variety of applications such as point-to-point voice and data communication, low speed modem applications, local area networks, and telemetry equipment. It provides a cost-effective, flexible solution for the interface circuit between digital signal processing systems and phone lines.
