MC74AC163MEL is an advanced synchronous 4-bit binary counter with advanced complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. It is well-suited for clock and data distribution applications. This logic device can achieve fast switching speeds, low power dissipation, and reduced circuit size. The MC74AC163MEL is used in a variety of applications including timer/counter circuits, shift registers, frequency dividers, and pulse generation circuits.Application FieldThe MC74AC163MEL has a wide range of applications in the fields of logic, automotive, communications and military industries. It is commonly used in simple 4-bit binary counters, counter dividers and pulse counters. It can also be used in data distribution and time-keeping applications. It is found in digital communication receivers, transceivers and multiplexers. It can also be used for frequency and timing control in a variety of digital systems, such as digital oscillators, modulators/demodulators, clock signals and timing signals.Working PrincipleThe MC74AC163MEL has four individual flip-flops, each one providing a single bit of a 4-bit binary counter. When the clock input goes high, each of the four bits in the counter will increase in value by one. The clock input triggers the flip-flops and controls whether the bits in the counter are incremented or not. The counter can be preset and reset to a specific value by the Q0A and Q0D inputs, and can be cleared by the Q1A, Q1B and Q1D inputs. This allows the user to preset any value into the counter.The counters have the ability to be interconnected with other counters, such as the MC74AC162MEL and MC74AC164MEL. This allows the user to cascade multiple counters together, increasing the counting capability. The counters can also be connected in parallel to increase the input clock frequency or divide it down to a slower frequency.The MC74AC163MEL has an active low asynchronous reset input, a common enable input and an asynchronous reset output, which provides simultaneous reset of all counters when an external reset signal is received. Additionally, the counters have an active low clock enable input, which allows the user to shut off the clock signal and pause the counting process.The counter requires a clock frequency between 2 MHz and 100 MHz. It operates over the temperature range of -55°C to 125°C, and is based on the advanced 0.32µm CMOS technology. The MC74AC163MEL is packaged in a 8-pin SOIC package and is available in a low power version, the MC74AC163MEL-LP.The MC74AC163MEL is widely used in a variety of counter, divider and pulse generation applications. It is used in simple time-keeping systems and digital communication receivers, transceivers and multiplexers.
