The MC74LVX257M has 256 data lines, and each one of them is connected to the output of the corresponding cell in the array. The 8 select lines, indicated in the figure below, are used to select which of the 256 data lines will be put on the bus.

The device is controlled by the latch enable (LD), the select (SEL) and the output enable (OE) signals. Depending on the status of the SEL and LD inputs, the contents of the 256-bit RAM can be read from the output pins. When SEL is \'Low\', no changes are made to the contents of the RAM, and the contents can be read from the 256 output pins. When SEL is \'High\', each bit in the RAM is written over by the data bit on the corresponding data pin.

The duty cycle of the LD signal determines the address of the cell that is written to. When the data on the data pins changes, the address of the cell to be written is determined by the trailing edge of the LD pulse. The output enable (OE) signal is used to control the three-state outputs of the device. When OE is \'Low\', the contents of the RAM can be read from the 256 output pins. Finally, the device also has an exclusive OR input/output (XOR) pin, which is used to control the direction of data flow. When XOR is \'Low\', the selection line is used to select the data output. When XOR is \'High\', the selection line is used to select the data input.
