An output voltage accuracy of ±2.5% over line and load, temperature and aging variation, plus a maximum line regulation of 0.1% and a load regulation of 0.2%, ensure that the regulation device can be used in applications that demand excellent accuracy, stability and low noise.The device consumes a relatively low quiescent current, under 2 mA, and features a low output voltage noise level of 20 μVP-P. It offers a wide input voltage range, from 2.7 V to 36 V, as well as input reverse polarity protection and output over-voltage protection. The MC78M12BDT needs few external components, making it a good choice for cost sensitive and space constrained applications, such as those found in telecommunications equipment and automotive systems. Additionally, the device can be used in user equipment powered from a battery and it’s also suitable for a wide range of audio applications.In terms of working principle, MC78M12BDT operates a buck regulator, using a p-channel MOSFET to regulate the output voltage. In a typical application, the device is driven by a voltage source of 2.7 V to 36 V. A resistor divider connected between the output and the FB pin sets the output voltage. A 47 nF capacitor on the FAULT pin provides input noise filtering.The output voltage of the MC78M12BDT is regulated by monitoring the voltage at the FB pin, and the error amplifier adjusts the Gate voltage of the p-channel MOSFET to keep the voltage at the FB pin close to the reference voltage value. The reference voltage is set by the resistor divider connected to the FB Pin, so the output voltage follows that value.When the device is overloaded and the output current tries to exceed the device\'s maximum output current, the OVP pin will go high to signal the fault condition and turn off the device. It will also terminate the output short-circuit protection. The MC78M12BDT voltage regulator is an ideal choice for a variety of applications. It offers excellent output voltage accuracy and noise performance, as well as its wide range of input and output voltages, in addition to its integrated short-circuit and thermal protection.
