Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs) form the backbone of any modern electronics system. One of the most important PMICs is the Supervisors which provide essential protection. The Microchip MCP1321T-20QI/OT is a System Supervisor with Power-Fail Detection and Battery Backup Solution used in low-power applications. It has an open collector power fail signal and an external watchdog input.

The MCP1321T-20QI/OT is a single-channel voltage supervisor with a low-voltage reset circuit and a power fail detector. This device supervisor can detect power fail conditions by monitoring both VCC and an external voltage source, such as a battery. In addition, the MCP1321T-20QI/OT has an active low open-drain reset output for MCU (Microcontroller Unit) reset, watch-dog timer input, and Manual Reset (MR) pin. The MR pin allows applications to perform a software reset on the MCU.

The MCP1321T-20QI/OT is reset when either ofits trip points are exceeded. The device uses one of two trip points to reset the system. The first trip point is called a Direct Reset (DR). The DR point is set to turn ON the reset output when the VCC voltage dips below the preset threshold. The second trip point is called an Inverted Reset (IR). The IR point is set to turn OFF the reset output when the VCC voltage exceeds the preset threshold.

The power fail detector in the MCP1321T-20QI/OT device is an open-drain open collector comparator that monitors both VCC and VBAT (Battery Backup). The power fail detector is reset and then enabled by writing a logic high to the Power-Fail Detection Enable (PFDE) pin. The power fail detector is then triggered when the VCC voltage falls below the preset threshold or when the VBAT voltage falls below the preset threshold.

The MCP1321T-20QI/OT device also has an external watchdog input, which is used to detect a system hang or system restart failure. This watchdog input pin requires a low-to-high transition to reset the watchdog and prevent a reset. The watchdog time-out can be set with the internal pull-up resistor on the WDT pin.
