MCP1791-5002E/ET Application Field and Working Principle
PMIC – Voltage Regulators – Linear involves use of Linear Regulators, that is, devices that operate by and produce a regulated voltage that is lower than the input voltage, commonly referred to as a “dropout” voltage. The MCP1791-5002E/ET is a non-synchronous, fixed-output, low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator. It operates with a wide input voltage range of 3V to 25V and can provide an output voltage of 5V with a low dropout voltage of 0.2V, referenced to ground. The MCP1791-5002E/ET includes various integrated features that protect the device. The active-low voltage inhibit pin (VINH), when pulled low, disengages all regulation control circuitry and pulls the output voltage to ground. It also includes open-drain thermal protection, current limit circuitry, soft start, reverse-current protection and over-temperature protection. The device provides up to 1A of output current, making it ideal for applications that require a low-dropout 5V power source. The device features low quiescent current, low operating current and low noise making it suitable for battery-powered applications. Working PrincipleThe MCP1791-5002E/ET works by regulating a voltage drop between its output (VOUT) and ground (VSS) pins. The dropout voltage is determined by the ratio of the device’s on-chip resistor, RON. The voltage drop sets up a voltage divider that reduces the voltage at VOUT. The voltage regulator uses a bandgap reference in order to set the output voltage at a constant value.The bandgap reference monitors the output voltage, VOUT, and compares it to the reference voltage. When VOUT rises above its nominal voltage, the bandgap decreasespulling the output voltage back towards its nominal value. The bandgap reference also acts to protect the device from having an output voltage that is too low, keeping the voltage difference between VOUT and ground ( VSS ) within a safe range.In order to provide maximum flexibility, the MCP1791-5002E/ET has a programmable output voltage range, adjustable via an external resistor divider connected to the VINH pin (voltage inhibit). This feature can be used to provide a voltage output that is lower than its nominal value.The device also includes various integrated features to protect the device.
