MCP3002-I/MS is an analog to digital converter (ADC) device manufactured by Microchip. It is a dual channel, 10-bit successive approximation ADC having an on-board sample and hold circuit. This device is designed to receive an analog input voltage and convert it into a corresponding digital word. It is programmable to provide an 8-bit resolution up to 10-bit. It has a wide range of applications in many fields, including automotive, industrial, automotive, and medical. The MCP3002-I/MS offers excellent performance, with 25 kHz continuous converter mode and 200 kHz burst mode. It also features analog input multiplexer support, low power consumption, and a variety of analog input ranges. The device has wide range of sample rates, from 10Hz to 10 kHz, and auto-calibration capability. It also has a PGA (Programmable Gain Amplifier) to ensure high accuracy and resolution. The device works on the principle of successive sampling and A/D conversion. At the start of conversion, the device starts a timer and then begins to sample the analog input voltage. This is followed by successive approximation, where the successive bits are compared to a reference voltage. If the bit is higher than the reference voltage, the bit is set to ‘1’ else ‘0’. After the completion of this comparison process, the converted digital word is outputted. The on-board sample and hold circuit is used to hold the analog input voltage for specified period of time after a conversion cycle. It consists of a high speed voltage switch (analog switch) which is connected between the external voltage and the Vref. When the analog input voltage is applied to the input and timer starts, the switch is activated by a control logic on the chip and the voltage is stored in the sample and hold circuit. The same input voltage is applied to the successive approximation logic while comparing it with the reference voltage. After the completion of the conversion cycle and conversion of the digital word, the switch is opened, and the voltage is returned to the original input voltage.The MCP3002-I/MS device has many advantages over other digital converters. It is easy to operate, has low power consumption, low noise and high speed conversion. It has single supply operating voltage range, up to 5.5V, and temperature range from -40 to +85 °C. The on-board sample and hold circuitry helps to reduce the external components count and improves the accuracy of the conversion. The wide variety of analog input ranges and adjustable PGA help to make the device a suitable choice for many industrial, automotive and medical applications. In automotive applications, the MCP3002-I/MS is used to measure the engine performance, fuel injection, emission control, and braking. The device is also used in medical applications to measure bio-electrical signals such as heart rate, body temperature, and respiration.
