Analog - to - digital converters (ADCs) are widely used in many applications, from automotive to medical imaging. The MCP3201-CI/SN is a high-performance, 16-bit SAR ADC that integrates an integrated 2.8V low-noise LDO, a 2V fast-startup LDO and a precision 1MHz voltage regulator.This combination of features enables the MCP3201-CI/SN to achieve excellent signal-to-noise ratios and wide dynamic range.
The main application fields of the MCP3201-CI/SN are high-precision, low-voltage signal conditioning, and signal processing from automotive to medical imaging. Auto-zeroing and an ultra-low-noise amplifier ensure excellent signal-to-noise ratio, while the integrated voltage regulator ensures good linearity and image rejection at low supply voltages, as low as 2V.The MCP3201-CI/SN also integrates an on-chip temperature sensor and enables accurate temperature compensation.
The working principle of the MCP3201-CI/SN is based on the successive-approximation-register (SAR) architecture. The SAR architecture converts the analog voltage into a digital code by means of the successive comparison of the analog input and the output of a digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The comparison is done in a series of steps.In each step, the analog input is compared to the DAC output, and depending on the result of this comparison, the next step will involve either a larger or a smaller code than the code used in the previous step.
The MCP3201-CI/SN utilizes a subranging technique to achieve a high-resolution ADC with a 16-bit resolution. The input voltage range is divided into a number of smaller ranges. The converter successively measures the analog input within each subrange and determines the output digital code accordingly.This technique is used to improve the accuracy and linearity of the ADC, as well as reduce its power consumption.
The MCP3201-CI/SN also features a digital calibration functionality that enables the device to eliminate any offset and gain errors present in the ADC.The digital calibration algorithms are stored in on-chip memory and can be programmed via the serial port. The stored calibration data is stored in on-chip Flash memory, and can be retrieved at any time.
The MCP3201-CI/SN also features an on-chip DNL (Differential-Non-Linearity) register to measure the result for all codes over a 0-3.3V input range. This is useful for characterizing ADC performance over time and environmental conditions.
The MCP3201-CI/SN is a highly-integrated ADC that provides excellent performance in high-precision, low-voltage signal conditioning and signal processing applications, particularly those in the automotive and medical imaging fields.
