The Texas Instruments (TI) MCP37D20-200I/TL is a quad-channel analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with microcontroller peripheral (MCP) compatibility. This device is targeted at data acquisition applications where a microcontroller or other digital system is unable to directly support an analog-to-digital conversion. The signal chain consists of a low-pass filter, a gain-adjustment stage, a programmable offset voltage, a multiplexer, and a successive-approximation register converter (SAR).The MCP37D20-200I/TL offers several advantages over using a microcontroller’s ADC for data conversion. The most important is the ability to convert signals with higher accuracy and faster conversion speed than a microcontroller ADC. This can be especially important in sensor systems where the accuracy of the signal being measured is critical. Additionally, the MCP37D20-200I/TL offers a programmable offset voltage which can be used to fine-tune the signal gains in certain applications.In terms of signal conditioning, the MCP37D20-200I/TL includes a low-pass filter, a low-noise pre-amplifier, a programmable gain amplifier, and an offset voltage circuit. This allows the user to set the input to the device, as well as the gain and offset voltages, so that the device is more easily able to convert the input signal. The device consumes just 2.6 mW at full throughput, making it an ideal choice for power-sensitive applications. Additionally, the device features a programmable gain amplifier, making it possible to adjust signal levels to fit the input range of the converter.
