Working Principle of MCP4822-E/SN

MCP4822 consists of two independent DACs with separate serial input and output lines. Each DAC can be written with a 48-bit data word consisting of 4 header bits, a 4-bit input gain control and 12-bit data words. The header bits indicate to the DAC the DAC address, write enable, control bit and power-on reset bit.

The gain control bits allow the user to scale the input voltage, by adjusting the value of the input voltage range. The range of the output voltage is set by the voltage reference, which can be connected to either the internal reference or an external reference. The reference voltage is then used to convert the 12-bit input data word into the analog voltage level.

MCP4822 includes a proprietary latch-up protection circuit, which prevents high voltage transients from damaging the device. The device contains a power-on reset circuit which ensures that the DAC outputs always power up at the same voltage level. This prevents undesired output levels which can result from voltage-level spikes.

MCP4822 is an excellent choice for applications where there is a requirement for accuracy and precision. The digital input provides the flexibility to use different gain settings and can be configured over the wide voltage range.
