PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers

The MIC2589R-2BM is part of the Hot Swap Controllers family of Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs) offered by Microchip Technology Inc. This device provides an integrated, intelligent way to manage the power delivery subsystem and system inrush current in high-reliability applications. It is suitable for point-to-point powered systems consisting of either two-rail, three-rail, or four-rail power supply. Functional Block Diagram

The MIC2589R-2BM consists of a configurable voltage supervisor, multiple voltage regulators, and a hot swap controller. The Voltage Supervisor allows users to detect and respond to power events such as brownouts, power faults, and over-voltages. The configurable Voltage Regulators allow users to power various components in the system such as memories, processors, hardware logic, and ASICs. Working Principle

The Hot Swap Controller employs a current-limit and inrush control technique to control the inrush current to the system. This is accomplished by using a configurable current limit and an inrush timer. Additionally, the Hot Swap Controller monitors and reports the over-temperature condition of the system by monitoring the internal temperature of the hot swap device. Furthermore, the MIC2589R-2BM features an integrated supply voltage regulator, which regulates the power up and power down sequencing. It also features a configurable brownout detector, which allows the user to monitor the supply voltage level of the system, and respond accordingly.
