The MIC2594-1YM-TR is a hot swap controller designed to reduce the inrush current that can be drawn when a bus or system is initially powered up. It limits the inrush current by slowly ramping up the supply voltage in order to prevent damage to power supplies or bus system components. The MIC2594-1YM-TR is part of an integrated set of solutions that can be used to quickly power up systems, bypass system shutdowns and reduce the cost of supplying high-currrent operations all while being compliant with applicable safety and regulatory standards.
The MIC2594-1YM-TR is designed to manage hot swap loads and limit the peak inrush current for a given load. It is a high-performance, high-current, low-cost solution for high-speed hot swap applications such as PCI Express power management, server, switch and telecom power control.
The core architecture of the MIC2594-1YM-TR is based on a three-stage control loop. In the first stage, the device limits inrush current to the overall system by slowly ramping up the output voltage. The second stage conducts constant current from the device into the system by dissipating the RMS current against an internal current sense resistor. Finally, in the third stage, the device limits the voltage drop across the system load, and then maintains the load voltage within a preset safety window.
The MIC2594-1YM-TR is a low-cost, low-jitter device ideal for hot swap controllers. It features a low on-resistance (on-resistance of 4 mΩ) that allows for fast and accurate current sensing, as well as a low turn-on/off threshold of 0.15 V/0.2 V, respectively. It has a high peak current foldback limit and an overcurrent detection function, which protects the system and allows for fast system recovery.
The MIC2594-1YM-TR hot swap controller incorporates various features that reduce component count and system cost. It has an adjustable soft start time (from 10 ms to 100 ms) that limits start-up inrush current, a slew rate limit function to limit system noise and current surges, a temperature-controlled foldback mode that helps maintain system stability and reduce component count, and a power good signal that allows for a system to detect an overcurrent condition within the load.
By reducing component count, increasing system utilization and providing a high-performance, low-jitter solution for hot swap applications, the MIC2594-1YM-TR device helps reduce total system cost. The device is available in the two most popular TSSOP packages, 36-pin and 48-pin, and is fully compatible with the PMBus standard.
