Hot swap controllers are power management ICs (PMICs) that control the power on/off sequence of a system or a bus, whether it is a CPU, voltage regulator or power source. MIC2597-1BTS Working Principle

MIC2597-1BTS hot swap controller enables safe insertion and removal of components from a live system by using the status signaling and diagnostics. The device draws only 5μA of quiescent current in the system, and contains an auto-reset option which offers an excellent protection against short-circuit conditions. The on board current limit functions are also provided, allowing system power-on inrush current to be tightly limited to a preset value, defined by an external sense resistor.

The device contains an overvoltage function (OVP) which limits the voltage rate of rise on the system bus to a preset threshold, defined by an external sense resistor. The OVP is fully integrated and triggered within 1µs from the bus exceeding a nominal threshold. In order to guarantee an efficient filter response on the system bus, the OVP includes an external gate control and a sink output that can drive an external NFET for discharge or an external NFET for initiation of an overvoltage protection shutdown.

The MIC2597-1BTS hot swap controller also contains a thermal supervisor which monitors the power source and it is equipped with one open-drain driver that operates from 1.8V to the supply voltage (VCC) of the device, and can be used to provide an appropriate warning to the system.
