The MIC37501-1.8WR-TR is a low-dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator that supports an input voltage range of 0.5V to 5.5V, and a fixed output voltage of 1.8V. The MIC37501-1.8W-TR is available in the 6-pin TSOT (top sealed outline) package and features low quiescent current (<1 μA) and very low dropout voltage (<60mV@250mA).
The MIC37501-1.8W-TR is designed to provide regulated output voltage while operating over a wide range of input voltage. It features internal thermal-overload protection, reverse current protection and reverse voltage protection, and can drive up to 250mA continuous current. The MIC37501-1.8W-TR can also act as a single-voltage regulator, or operate as a low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator to provide a steady output voltage for digital circuitry and/or analog loads.

Working principle
The MIC37501-1.8WR-TR operates using the typical linear regulator principle. In this arrangement, an input voltage is applied to an NPN pass transistor, which is connected in series between the power supply and the load. This pass transistor is controlled by the internal error amplifier and N-channel pass transistor. When the output voltage drops below a certain predetermined level, the error amplifier drives the gate of the pass transistor to reduce the voltage drop across the pass transistor while regulating the output voltage. The internal thermal-overload protection prevents excessive transistor heating.
When the output voltage starts to fall, the error amplifier senses the decrease in voltage, adjusts the current in the N-channel pass transistor, and reduces the voltage drop across the NPN pass transistor. As the voltage drop across the NPN pass transistor gets lower, the output voltage is regulated to the predetermined level. The N-channel pass transistor remains off until the output voltage starts to fall again, at which point the cycle is repeated.
The MIC37501-1.8WR-TR offers additional protection features in the form of current and reverse voltage protection, as well as over-temperature protection. The over-temperature protection feature shuts off the N-channel pass transistor if its terminal temperature exceeds a predetermined threshold, thereby protecting the device from overheating.
