MIC45205-1YMP-EV is an evaluation board of the latest generation of Digital Multi-Phase (DMP™) controllers from Micrel. This advanced controller provides a cost-effective solution for high current and high efficiency non-isolated DC/DC synchronous buck converters operating up to 2MHz. The MIC45205-1YMP-EV is a versatile evaluation board designed for the New DMP technology that advances power conversion to the latest state of the art. It is designed to evaluate the MIC45205 digital multi-phase buck controller featuring current sharing capability, adaptive on-time (AOT) control and asynchronous mode.
The MIC45205-1YMP-EV has an integrated short-circuit protection and also has the ability to program the current limit, soft-start time, on-time and other operating parameters. The evaluation board provides flexibility with a wide output voltage range of 0.3V to 5V at a maximum load current of 8A.
The MIC45205-1YMP-EV evaluation board can provide efficient and low-noise solutions for many types of non-isolated ac or dc-dc power conversion applications, including telecom and networking systems, consumer and computer applications, and embedded computing power systems. It also meets the real-time requirements of some industrial and medical applications.
The evaluation board utilizes the MIC45205 controller and MCH3406 MOSFET driver, and is capable of providing outputs up to 8A with nearly 90% efficiency over a wide output voltage range. The controller is capable of operating in continuous and discontinuous conduction modes using an AUTO-CCM algorithm, which allows the user to utilize the highest power density achievable in a given design.
Using the SYNC pin and system clock, the MIC45205-1YMP-EV can be configured to operate at two-phase, three-phase, four-phase and even up to five-phase operation. This allows for a high level of flexibility when designing DC/DC synchronous buck converters.
The MIC45205-1YMP-EV evaluation board also allows for flexibility and ease of use by housing all the necessary components in a compact single board solution. It is designed to minimize the number of components necessary for closed loop operation, and to reduce the complexity involved with designing multi-phase power solutions. The MIC45205-1YMP-EV is also capable of running from a wide input voltage range, from 4.5V to 18V and is compatible with multiple input footprints for flexibility.
The basic working principle behind the MIC45205-1YMP-EV evaluation board is a digital multiphase control algorithm. The multiphase control algorithm allows for a high level of integration and features an adaptive on-time (AOT) control loop which utilizes phase interleaving and allows for the conversion of high power densities, with minimal input output capacitors and minimal power losses.
The adaptive on-time (AOT) control loop is an innovative method which adjusts the time between the transition of phases whenever the load current is changing. This ensures that the amount of time in each phase stays constant, while ensuring that the power losses due to switching are minimized.
The MIC45205-1YMP-EV leverages the advantages of super-integrated multi-phase digital load-line control and synchronous rectification to deliver high performance, small form-factor DC-DC power conversion solutions. Its integrated digital multi-phase controller, featuring current-sharing capability, Asynchronous mode, plug-an-play soft-start, as well as adjustable switching frequency and current slew rate provides a fully featured and flexible power management solution for a wide range of DC-DC non-isolated power conversion applications.
