PMIC - LED Drivers are increasingly used in a variety of applications. The MIC4801YM is a DC-DC converter from Microchip Technology which is specialized for driving LEDs or loads from low voltage sources.
The MIC4801YM is a triple output, high efficiency synchronous DC-DC converter which is ideal for powering LEDs from a single cell Li-Ion battery. It consists of two high power N-channel MOSFETs, two synchronously rectified buck converters and a low power linear regulator in a 4mm x 4mm QFN package. This device has adjustable current limit, input and output voltage regulation, high accuracy current sensing and low noise operation.
It offers high accuracy (typically ±1% over-temperature) and easy to use current limit circuitry for LED battery powered systems. Its PFM mode switching architecture provides superior efficiency characteristics which result in long battery life when powering high current LEDs. It also offers a high-accuracy, on-the-fly current limit adjustment up to 3A depending on the LED string.
The MIC4801YM provides a small solution size, high efficiency, wide input range (1.8V to 5.5V) and very small package. It also features reverse polarity protection, input under-voltage lockout, thermal protection, output over-voltage protection and frequency jittering to reduce EMI radiation. The MIC4801YM can provide output powers of up to 9W in buck mode depending on the input voltage, making it ideal for driving a wide range of loads including LEDs.
The MIC4801YM is designed to drive up to 3 strings of LEDs in parallel, with each LED string operating at its own regulated current level. This device offers constant current regulation and the output voltage of each LED string is adjusted through the current limit pin to deliver the required LED current. The MIC4801YM also offers accurate current sensing and over temperature protection, providing additional protection to the LEDs. It also has a feedback loop which allows the user to control each LED string’s brightness.
The MIC4801YM is available in a 4mm x 4mm QFN package and is suitable for a variety of applications such as cell phone handsets, digital cameras, PDA’s, LCD TVs and automotive lighting. Due to its small form factor, the MIC4801YM is the perfect solution for space-constrained applications. The device is also ideal for automotive lighting applications which require high efficiency and low power consumption.
