Introduction

A MIC4721YMM-TR (MIC47X1) is a powerful and cost-effective single output, high performance, synchronous step-down DC-DC converter featuring integrated high and low side FETs in a small 2mm X 2mm package. This device is an on-chip synchronous buck converter rated for 1A continuous output current, providing adjustable output voltage ranging from 0.6V to 4.2V. Regardless of the input voltage, the DC-DC converter maintains good performance while reducing output voltage. It offers excellent transient response, low EMI, and high efficiency.

Application Field

The MIC4721YMM-TR is widely used in many applications including powering microprocessors, FPGAs, ASICs, system-level power supplies, portable devices, set-top boxes, media players, cameras, and other consumer and industrial applications where low noise and high efficiency are required. It is designed to be used in applications requiring high efficiency, low ripple, and high current such as PC platforms and digital TVs, providing power supply conversion to second stage regulators, or powering core logic chipsets from 0.8V to 4.2V. Also, it can also be used in Point-of- Load (POL) DC-DC converters, rdams, ADSL Modems, Network Interface Controllers, Wireless Base Stations, and other devices requiring a High-Energy Efficiency Step-Down Regulator.

Working Principle

The MIC4721YMM-TR DC-DC converter uses a synchronous buck converter with two internal high-side FETs and two low-side FETs. The internal MOSFETs are connected in an H-bridge configuration to form a push-pull type converter, which uses a clock signal to drive both FETs. The cycle-by-cycle current limit is typically enabled in pulse-width modulation (PWM) mode and the converter can operate in fixed frequency mode or in fast response mode with a frequency ramping algorithm. This DC-DC converter uses input current mode control that maintains low hysteresis as well as fast response time. Additionally, the MIC4721YMM-TR DC-DC converter has a wide input voltage range with good transient response and high efficiency.The DC-DC switch is placed between the input power source and the output load. The switch operates in two modes, active and standby. In active mode, the switch is closed, allowing current flow from input voltage to the output voltage. In standby mode, the switch is open, preventing any current flow. The purpose of pulse width modulation is to control the average output current; the higher the duty cycle, the more power is delivered onto the output.The DC-DC converter also has integrated compensation network which senses the output voltage and provides the necessary feedback for the converter to remain in regulation. The compensation network consists of an external resistor, an external capacitor, and voltage feedback to the integrated error amplifier. The IC includes overvoltage, undervoltage, and overcurrent protections.
