Gate Drivers are an important type of PMICs that control the switching of power transistors by providing control signals from low-power logic IC’s and microprocessors. MIC4423YN is a widely-used gate driver IC from Microchip Technology, which has wide-ranging applications in the power management field.

Features

The MIC4423YN Gate Driver IC is an integrated circuit that is rated for a 30 Volt collector-emitter peak voltage with a maximum peak output current of 1.6A. Working Principle

The MIC4423YN Gate Driver IC operates based on the variable frequency hysteresis methodology. This principle works by using an internal voltage loop that consists of two comparators and two adjustable frequency resistors. When the upper comparator’s voltage is higher than the lower comparator’s, the gate output of the IC is switched on, allowing current to flow from the collector to the emitter. When the upper comparator’s voltage is lower than the lower comparator’s, the gate output of the IC is switched off, stopping the flow of current between the collector and emitter.

In the Driven Active mode, the output pulses the gate with a fixed duty cycle. When the input signal is high, the duty cycle is high. On the other hand, in the Active Break-Before-Make mode, the clamping output clamps the gate signal whenever the signal is transitioning from low to high. This ensures that the signal is pulled low, before it is driven high again. Finally, in the Floating Active mode, the output keeps the flux controlled gate at VCC, eliminating any contact bouncing and noise.
