MIC47050YML-TR is a four-terminal inverting linear voltage regulator, a type of power management integrated circuit (PMIC) which is available in a tiny 1x1, 2x2, and 3x3 MicrouV solution packages. This device, distributed by Micrel, Inc., is capable of sourcing and sinking currents up to 500mA and provides 1.2V to 5.5V of adjustable output voltage.This PMIC comes in a standard surface mount package and boasts a fast on/off enable/disable capability with better than 1% regulation accuracy. The current limit is adjustable through the Ilim pin, which programs the current limiting threshold levels. The MIC47050YML-TR has an on-chip voltage reference providing 1% initial tolerance and a temperature drift of 2ppm/ degree C. It is suitable to operate in the temperature range of -40° C to 125° C and is adjustable from 1.2V to 5.5V.The MIC47050YML-TR has a wide range of applications. It can be used for providing power to DSPs, microcontrollers, processors, different ASICs and various other digital applications. It is also suitable for supplying power for mobile phones, radio data network base stations, and various other battery operated systems. It is capable of supplying power for the various low-voltage and linear regulated circuits, thus proving beneficial for various low-voltage DC-DC converters. This device also finds application in other applications such as LCDs, electrical motors, and laptops.The MIC47050YML-TR operates in a linear-implemented topology. It is an inverting topology where the ground of the output load is connected to the output of the switching regulator, which is driven by an input voltage of the range of 1.2V to 5.5V. The MIC47050YML-TR consists of a voltage reference followed by an error amplifier, which together generates the output voltage. The reference voltage is set by the voltage divider, which can be programmable by the Ilim pin. The error amplifier is used to compare the output voltage to a fixed reference voltage and then adjusts the output voltage accordingly. In other words, the error amplifier modulates the input voltage of the regulator in order to keep the output voltage constant.The output voltage can be adjusted within a pre-defined range, by changing the voltage divider network that is connected to the Ilim pin. The voltage divider network is responsible for generating a smaller control voltage that is compared to a reference voltage. This comparison is then used to adjust the output voltage. The output current is also adjustable and can be set by connecting an external resistor across the Ilim pin.The MIC47050YML-TR is also equipped with a few protection features such as thermal shut down, over current limiting and reverse voltage protection. Thermal shut down helps to shut off the device if the temperature is too high. Over current limiting prevents the device from drawing excessive current. Lastly, the reverse voltage protection prevents any reverse currents from flowing to the output and damaging the device.The MIC47050YML-TR is a very useful power management integrated circuit rated at 500mA and with 1.2V to 5.5V adjustment range. It is suitable for providing power to digital systems, mobile phones and radio data base stations.
