MIC5011YN Application Field and Working Principle
MIC5011YN is a High-Side MOSFET/IGBT Gate Drivers produced by Micrel. It is categorized under PMIC - Gate Drivers. This article provides a detailed description of its application field and working principle.
Application Field
MIC5011YN is mainly used for driving IGBTs or MOSFETs as switches in several kinds of power converters. The typical application is for synchronous rectification in DC-DC converters, but also for driving high power single FETs in AC switches. It can handle up to 10A peak current for driving the FETs.
It is suitable for a wide range of applications such as:
- DC-DC Converters;
- Switched Mode Power Supplies;
- Inverters;
- Motor Control;
- Uninterruptible Power Supplies;
- Photovoltaics;
- Battery Chargers.
Working Principle
The IC has two stages: driver stage and high-side FET stage. Its working principle can be divided into two parts.
Driver Stage
The driver stage consists of several high-voltage open drain NMOS transistors grouped as source and drain drivers. Each source and drain driver pair has to be connected to the same DC supply voltage to guarantee the functionality of the driver stage. Then, the source and drain drivers, having their respective base terminals always at the same voltage level, ensure the appropriate switching behaviour of the FET.
The simple level conversion can be performed just with a pull-up resistive network connected to an adequate DC supply, so it is possible to control the gate of the FET with a low voltage control signal. They can be driven by any 5V logic family since they are able to withstand up to 12V of voltage.
High-side FET Stage
The high-side FET stage consists of two buffered logic signals (GATE and IN) to control the gate of the FET. Since it does not include an internal FET, an external FET must be connected to the FET pin. The MIC5011YN has a voltage compatible with low voltage MOSFETs but it can drive high voltage, high side MOSFETs as well.
The MIC5011YN act as an open drain FET driver. When the logic level GATE signal rises, the logic signal IN transitions to turn the FET on, while when the logic signal IN transitions to turn the FET off, the logic signal GATE falls, ensuring a fast response time to turn the FET on or off.
