MK5812S application field and working principle
Clock/Timing - Clock Generators, PLLs, Frequency Synthesizers use the MK5812S (H8/3146B) Frequency Synthesizer circuit to generate precision and reliable signals. The MK5812S is an 8-bit control logic circuit with an internal reference clock divider, dedicated logic from selection, status registers and power switch control logic. It provides a programmable frequency from 5 to 150kHz in the range of 0 to 1kHz resolution and precision controlled by a single reference clock (6MHz to 20MHz).The MK5812S is particularly suited for providing a clock signal for frequency-controlled devices. By combining the MK5812S with a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) and a phase detector, it is possible to build a phase locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer. Such a system is capable of providing a frequency-agile signal, usually in an electrical signal form. The MK5812S runs on power supplies that range from 4.5V to 10V.The MK5812S has two digital input pins which are used to select the reference frequency of the PLL. The first input pin is used to select the set of frequency channels, while the second is used to specify the particular frequency to use. When the input pins are set at different states, the PLL can produce signals with different frequencies. The output frequency of the PLL is determined by the reference frequency divided by a value programmed into the MK5812S.The internal logic of the MK5812S controls the output of the PLL. The first logical step of the circuit is to enable the power supply for the VCO. When the power is supplied for the VCO, the MK5812S will detect the output frequency of the VCO and adjust the divide-by-N register to the appropriate value. The output of the PLL is then connected to the external VCO through the divide-by-N register.The MK5812S has a "lock" status bit that indicates if the output of the PLL and the electronic signal is in sync or not. The MK5812S also has a "power down" status bit which can be used to reduce the power consumption of the MK5812S. The MK5812S is designed to operate in a wide range of applications. Among them one could mention the frequency synthesis of signals for audio, video, and wireless systems. It can also be used in frequency hopping systems, frequency shifting systems, and frequency control systems. The MK5812S is able to keep an internal database of the frequencies of all its programmed channels. This database is updated with the help of a microcomputer that sends instructions to the MK5812S using an 8-bit parallel interface.The MK5812S also offers a flexible control over the frequency selection, enabling the user to easily switch between any of the programmed frequencies. This makes the MK5812S very useful in frequency hopping systems, by allowing the user to easily switch to a different frequency rapidly.The MK5812S also offers a status indicator, indicating if the PLL is locked onto the frequency and the power necessary for operating the MK5812S.
