MLP272M100EB0A Working Principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are formed by rolling a layer of anodized aluminum foil into a tube, then depositing an electrolyte into the tube to form two electrodes. The anodized aluminum foil is the anode and the electrolyte is the cathode. The electrolyte consists of a solution of organic and inorganic salts which, when subjected to an electrical field, create an electric double layer between the two electrodes. This double layer acts as a barrier to electric current, allowing the capacitor to store electrical energy.

When the capacitor is connected to a voltage source, the anodic oxide on the aluminum foil reacts with the electrolyte and forms an electric double layer. This double layer builds up and stores positive and negative charges on the anodic foil and the electrolyte, respectively. The capacitance of the capacitor is directly proportional to the amount of surface area of the anodic foil, the permittivity of the electrolyte, and the separation between the anodic foil and the electrolyte. Thus, the larger the surface area and the greater the separation between the layers, the higher the capacitance.

When the capacitor is discharged, the anodic oxide on the aluminum foil returns to its original state and the charges that were stored in the electric double layer are dissipated. The capacitor is able to sustain a large amount of current for a brief period of time before it is discharged.
