The MMSZ5235B-7 is a semiconductor device commonly used as a voltage regulator. This type of diode is known as a Zener diode, named after Clarence Zener who discovered the phenomenon of a diode’s reverse breakdown voltage in 1934. It was developed shortly after Silicon Planar Tunnel diodes in 1932, and is still widely used to this day in everything from radio receivers to spacecraft design.

Basically, Zener diodes are PN junction diodes like a conventional diode, with the distinction that they can operate in the reverse-bias mode. When a voltage is applied to the reverse-bias PN junction, the Zener diode begins to conduct current and behaves similarly to a normal diode in forward-biased mode. When the reverse bias voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the diode, a large current avalanche is set off in the diode, maintaining a much more stable reverse-bias voltage. The MMSZ5235B-7 Zener diode is an exception as it has a voltage regulation limit of only 1%. While most Zener diodes offer better than 3% regulation, this diode’s low-voltage regulation limit makes it ideal for applications where small variations in output voltage can be tolerated.

The MMSZ5235B-7 Zener diode is a 4-lead, planar, hermetically-sealed, glass-encapsulated device with an operating junction temperature range of -55˚C to +175˚C. It offers excellent reverse surge current and power dissipation capabilities, with a maximum reverse leakage current of 100nA, and a maximum dynamic impedance of 10Ω. It can be operated at voltages up to 50 Volts and can handle current up to 5 Amps. It is an ideal device for use in energy-efficient applications such as lighting, inverters, and rectifiers.

The working principle of the MMSZ5235B-7 Zener diode is similar to that of a conventional PN junction diode, with the addition of a Zener breakdown phenomenon. When the forward-bias voltage is applied to the diode, the depletion region formed between the P and N regions increases, and the diode becomes reflecting to most input currents. However, if the applied voltage is greater than the breakdown voltage of the diode, then the depletion region will dissipate and a reverse-bias voltage is now applied. When this happens, the semiconductive material in the depletion region will no longer be able to restrict the current and a high surge current flows through the circuit. This surge current is known as an avalanche current and is what gives the Zener diode its unique ability to provide an effectively regulated voltage.

MMSZ5235B-7 Zener diodes are used in a variety of applications, such as in switching power supplies, voltage stabilizers, voltage regulators, overvoltage protection circuits, voltage dividers, and clipper/clamper circuits. In most applications, they are used to provide a stable and regulated voltage output, as they are able to maintain a constant voltage level in the face of fluctuations in the input voltage.
