MMSZ5246B-HE3-18 tapers off the current to the component by dissipating heat. It works as an avalanche diode at the zener voltage. When the voltage rises beyond the zener voltage, typically −2.4 V to −93 V, the diodes stimulate an avalanche effect which causes a high surge of current and large temperature rise. This has two simple functions. It firstly reduces the voltage applied to the component, and secondly it dissipates the maximum amount of heat away from the component.
At normal operating conditions, the two diodes connected in series allow current to flow across the zener diode in the opposite direction, yet not exceeding the zener voltage threshold. When the voltage level rises beyond the zener voltage threshold, the diode breaks down and a large surge of current passes through it, usually more than the forward voltage of the second diode. This then maintains the voltage to the component at the zener voltage, therefore reducing the voltage thus protecting the component from its maximum continuous operating voltage.
