The MOC80213S is an optoisolator consisting of a infrared light emitting diode optically coupled to a photosensitive transistor. It operates as a signal isolator, allowing for two circuits (sender and receiver) to communicate while galvanically isolated from each other.MOC80213S devices are offered in a number of different configuration options. The most common being a transistor output type, where the transistor output is isolated from the emitter of the LED. In this configuration, the optoisolator transmits a digital signal, usually between 0V and 5V depending on the LED voltage. The transistor output is either an NPN or PNP transistor, and the threshold voltage varies depending on the model.The optoisolator is used to isolate electronics from the environment or other circuits. This is done by sending a light signal across a gap between two circuits, in place of an electrical signal. This has the advantage of not only preventing electrical shock, but also isolating the receiver from electro-magnetic interference.MOC80213S devices are typically used in a variety of applications including:• Industrial automation and safety systems• Home automation and security systems• Medical equipment• Automotive systems• Digital signal transmission • Isolating control signals from high-voltage or noisy circuits• Computer peripherals• Air conditioning / heating systemsAs with most optoisolators, the operation of the MOC80213S is based upon the principle of photoelectric emission (luminescence). The MOC80213S consists of an LED, photosensor and a transistor driver. When the LED is energized, it emits light which is detected by the photosensor. This causes the photosensor to generate an electrical current which is amplified by the transistor driver. The amplified current is then used to control the ON/OFF state of the device, allowing for either digital or analog information to be transmitted over the isolation barrier.The MOC80213S can also be used as a current loop isolator. This process is similar to the digital signal transmission discussed above, but instead of driving the transistor, the LED is used to directly modulate a current signal. This signal is sent across the isolation gap to the receiver, and the current is used to control the output voltage or current of the receiver.The MOC80213S is an ideal device for a variety of applications where noise, electric shock, or electromagnetic interference needs to be prevented. It is also a cost-effective device for digital signal transmission, due to its small size and low cost.
