Power Management IC chips with integrated battery charger control are often referred to as PMIC-Battery Chargers. One of these power management ICs, MP2604DQ-LF-P, is designed to intelligently control Li-ion / Li-Polymer battery charging process in mobile phone, notebook computer and other portable electronic devices. Working Principle
MP2604DQ-LF-P utilizes a 16-bit DSP core to control battery charging current and voltage. It operates on a slave control mode and communicates with the host over an I2C interface. The I2C interface is used to configure the various parameters such as input voltage, maximum charging current, termination voltage, etc. Additionally, the status of the charging process can also be monitored through the I2C interface. The MP2604DQ-LF-P includes several blocks for battery charging: A charge pump, a linear regulator, and a battery protection circuit. The charge pump is responsible for generating higher output voltage from a lower input voltage. This is used to power the other blocks of the charging system. The linear regulator is used to provide regulated supply voltage to the system. The battery protection circuit monitors the battery voltage and current, and provides protection from overcharge, overdischarge, over temperature and short circuit.
MP2604DQ-LF-P provides step down charging method for Li-ion / Li-Polymer battery pack. The charging process is based on the Charge-FET (field effect transistor) feedback control. The current through the Charge-FET is sensed by an internal current sensing amplifier, which drives the error amplifier. Additionally, the battery protection circuit will activate a fault indicator if the charging current exceeds the maximum current limit. This indicates an over-current condition, which could potentially cause permanent damage to the battery.
