MP2617AGL-Z

The MP2617AGL-Z is a high-efficiency, synchronous step-down battery charger PMIC. It enables a wide range of battery charging solutions with its dual output, True-Power-Path operation, direct cold-start, active power-supply reverse protection, and CC/CV modes. Designed for input voltages as high as 16V and up to 2A of charging current, the MP2617AGL-Z provides a true power solution consisting of an LDO, a bypass and protection functionality all in one single package.

MP2617AGL-Z is suitable for applications such as those found in automotive, industrial, and consumer device applications. It can be used for secondary, backup, and lead-acid based battery charging. The MP2617AGL-Z is most commonly used for charging Li-ion batteries, either as a standalone system or in conjunction with a solar panel or other power source.

The MP2617AGL-Z’s operating principle is based on a dual-output, step-down (buck) charging system. The two main components of the charger, a buck-converter and LDO, work together to generate a dual-output, highly-efficient and reverse-protected power source. The buck-converter works by using a high-frequency transformer to step down the input voltage, while the LDO comprises an adjustable voltage regulator and power-supply protection circuitry.

The MP2617AGL-Z provides an adjustable CC/CV point and True-Power-Path operation. True-Power-Path capability is designed to ensure maximum power delivery, even when the battery is being charged from an input source other than the charger’s output. In True-Power-Path mode, the charger is able to switch from the input to the battery when the battery’s charging current exceeds the limit of the input source, allowing for maximum power delivery. It also offers enhanced reverse-protection, allowing for the battery to charge even when the input voltage is reversed.

The MP2617AGL-Z’s dual-output allows for two charging rates. In CC/CV mode, the user can adjust the constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) points. The user can also set the maximum output power and configure the LDO to a lower voltage than the buck converter output, thus making it ideal for multi-cell applications.
