The MPXV4006GC6U is a piezo-resistive pressure sensor, a type of transducer that uses the piezoresistance effect to convert pressure into a measurable electrical signal. The sensing surface in this type of transducer consists of the piezoresistors, which are the materials that react to mechanical forces. Two or more piezoresistors, which have different resistance levels, are placed in a Wheatstone bridge configuration. Other components include a ceramic diaphragm, a silicon base and a MCU.
The Wheatstone bridge is an electrical circuit configured with four resistors. The bridge is connected to a voltage source and when in balance, no current will flow through the bridge. When the bridge is out of balance, current will flow. The voltage source is applied before pressure is applied to the transducer, and when the pressure is applied, the resistance will change, which will cause the bridge output voltage to change and the resistance level will become unbalanced. This produced output voltage is then processed by the MCU to produce an analog signal. This analog signal is then amplified and converted into a standard 10 to 18 millivolt output.
The piezoresistors are made of materials such as silicon or polysilicon and are patterned on the diaphragm of the transducer. When pressure is applied to the surface of the diaphragm, the piezoresistive material deforms and changes resistance. The amount of deformation and the subsequent change in resistance depends on the amount of pressure applied. The piezoresistors are patterned in such a way that the resistance decreases with increasing pressure, and increases with decreasing pressure.
The MPXV4006GC6U is very reliable and is temperature compensated for use in temperatures ranging from -20°C to 80°C. It also has very low power consumption and is very accurate, repeatable and stable. It’s been extensively tested and is suitable for a wide range of medical and industrial applications.
