TVS – Diodes

TVS – Transient Voltage Suppressors are semiconductor-based elements used to protect electrical and electronic circuits from transient overvoltage conditions – commonly known as ‘surges’. This type of overvoltage can be caused by a variety of sources like lightning, contact with currents originating from utility power lines, and switching operations and short-circuits in the device itself. The task of the TVS-diode is to conduct high-energy current through the associated circuit, dissipating it as heat and thus protecting the device from overvoltage. In the context of a TVS-diode protection, an N-channel diode is the most commonly used device.MSMCJLCE45AE3 is a TVS-diode specifically designed as protection for high-end electronic devices like cameras, hard disks, and other sensitive equipment subjected to surges. It offers dual channel protection in one single package, and is also known as a “ESD-protection diode” for its ability to protect against direct-mode electrostatic discharges. Out of a full-wave rectifier, the MSMCJLCE45AE3 hosts two TVS-diodes, one at each side. The working principle of the MSMCJLCE45AE3 is quite simple: it consists of two diodes with different turn-on voltages that work together to protect the circuit against transient surge voltages. The “lower breakover voltage” diode is designed to conduct at a predetermined voltage and protect against low-energy transient surges, while the “higher breakover voltage” diode will pick up the higher-energy surge and conduct it to ground. The dielectric strength of the MSMCJLCE45AE3 is greater than 5V@125°C, allowing it to handle a much higher voltage than the direct-mode electrostatic discharges (ESD) whose maximum range is below 3V. Additionally, the MSMCJLCE45AE3 can safely withstand a current of 70A and voltages of up to 200V.
