MXL5KP75CAE3 is a part of transient voltage suppressor (TVS) family from Microsemi, earlier known as Siliconix, with a maximum peak pulse power rating of 13.1 kW that the device can dissipate. This non-x2 rated diode is designed to protect sensitive electronics and their assemblies against electrical transients generated by a variety of high voltage electrical line applications.
This device uses a P75 structure having back-to-back Zener diodes that provide suppression to transient voltage surges up to 6 kV in the plastic-based through-hole-mount packages. Each diode has a specified breakdown voltage (VBR) of 13.5V with a 6.5V standoff voltage. The extremely fast turn-on time and the low off-state leakage current provide superior protection to the sensitive assemblies even in the presence of high and low temperatures.

MXL5KP75CAE3 Working Principle
The working principle of the MXL5KP75CAE3 is based on Zener diode with an additional breakdown mechanism. When a large surge of unwanted voltage is applied to the device, its Zener diode begins to conduct the excessive voltage and the additional breakdown mechanism acts to absorb and dissipate the surge energy. This helps prevent damage to the sensitive circuits from the surge and keeps the voltage in the desired range.
Apart from Zener diode, the reverse operating or avalanche mechanism is also used in MXL5KP75CAE3 to conduct excessive voltage causing the electrons to gain enough energy to break through the depletion layer of the diode. The sudden overflow of current due to thermal effect helps short circuit the voltage, thereby reducing the available supply and limiting the damage.
