Introduction

The MXSMLG33A is a transient suppression diode (TVS - Diode) which utilizes an active metal layer to protect systems from overvoltage damage or destruction and provide an adequate bidirectional protection system. Device Structure

The MXSMLG33A is a two-terminal, multilayer silicon avalanche diode package device (SMD 33A). It is made up of a metal-oxide layer (MOL) between the active metal layer and an oxide layer, which together form a junction barrier. The structure is completed by a nitride layer on the surface of the oxide layer to provide electrical isolation.

Application Field

Working Principle

The MXSMLG33A functions by combining the several layers in the structure to effectively suppress transients, voltages up to 33V. In normal operation, the deposited metal-oxide layer acts as a junction barrier between the active metal layer and the cathode. This keeps the device’s steady-state voltage within specified limits and prevents excessive current flowing from the anode to the cathode.

When a voltage spike occurs, the diode\'s junction barrier is breached and an avalanche breakdown current flows between the two terminals, providing a shorting mechanism that clamps the spike to the device\'s breakdown voltage. This helps protect circuits from overvoltage conditions, and provides a very large, yet transient-capable, protection zone.
