The NCP1835MN20R2 is a high efficient and highly integrated dual-stage synchronous step-down DC/DC converter and battery charger controller with high performance and low quiescent current. It has been designed to managing both the battery charging process and the voltage regulation process in portable device applications. Feature

The NCP1835MN20R2 features an integrated PWM converter with a synchronous low side MOSFET with low-side current monitoring and a dedicated VBoost for charging two batteries in series. It allows for efficient battery charging and voltage regulation process, and supports top-off charging at the end of the charging cycle. It also features low-side current sensing and temperature sensing support for accurate control of both the charge and the voltage regulation process. The device also includes a full set of protections against overcurrent, overtemperature, and reverse input regulation.

Working Principle

The NCP1835MN20R2 is a dual-stage synchronous step-down DC/DC converter and battery charger controller with high performance and low quiescent current. It incorporates two buck converters, one with synchronous low-side MOSFET and one with a high-side current monitoring circuit. The device is capable of supplying up to 3A of output current and supports both high voltage and low voltage output. The device features a dedicated VBoost for efficient charging of two batteries in series and high-side current sensing for accurate current control.

The two buck converters switch at different frequencies, so that higher power densities and higher efficiencies can be achieved. The device supports low-side current sensing, temperature sensing, and protection against overcurrent, overtemperature, and reverse input regulation.

In terms of charging, the device supports both top-off charging and trickle charging. When trickle charging, the charge current is automatically adjusted depending on the battery voltage. Once the battery is fully charged, the device enters the top-off phase and maintains the cells in balance. During this phase, the charge current is regulated in order to maintain the cells in a safe condition.
