NCV3066 is a high efficient, low cost Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) integrated circuit (IC) for driving LEDs. It is a high performance controller for buck-boost or boost-only LED driver applications. The highly integrated standard boost-only channel comes with an input voltage range of 4.5V to 40V and a maximum output current of 1.5A, with an internal thermal overload protection, short circuit protection and linear current control. It utilizes a digital Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control circuit to regulate the LED current to a predetermined level.
The IC also provides two analog inputs with precision voltage reference, allowing 4-step dimming through either a digital or an analog current adjustment. The IC also supports a high side current sense input with a programmable current measurement range that allows a more precise LED current regulation when the LED string voltage drops too low. NCV3066 offers multiple diagnostic features and adjustable output programming, with a very low quiescent current.
NCV3066MNTXG application field mainly includes applications such as commercial LED lighting, LED dimming, automotive lighting and general purpose. The application for this IC includes LED driver for 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V, LED dimming or brightness control and automotive headlamp or fog light operation. The PWM control technique is based on the fact that LED current can be controlled by altering the LED’s duty cycle; when the LED is kept on for a longer duration, its current increases, while the current decreases when the duty cycle is reduced. The duty cycle of the signal applied to the LED is varied to control the LED current according to a programmed modulation signal. The modulation signal varies linearly with the input signal, allowing the LED current to be linearly varied in response to a digital or analog signal.
By using a dimming signal as input, the controller automatically adjusts the duty cycle of the PWM signal, resulting in a controllable LED current, and an automatic adjustment for variated Vin or varying load conditions. This can be used to alter the brightness of the LED or to drive the LED intermittently, based on the programming of the modulation signal. Additionally, a current loop is also used to control the LED current more accurately. The boost-only channel incorporates an internal high-side current sense input, allowing a more accurate LED current control when the LED string voltage drops down.
The IC is ideal for dimming applications, such as LED daytime running light, LED shift indicators and other safety indicator lighting systems. The LED current can be easily adjusted for various LED applications, and for any combination of LED modules and LED strings. As a low-cost, high-efficiency, highly integrated device, the NCV3066MNTXG provides a robust and reliable solution for buck-boost or boost-only LED driver applications.
