NCV8509PDW25R2 application field and working principle

The NCV8509PDW25R2 is a Linear Voltage Regulator from the PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Linear range of products from ON Semiconductor. It is a high-side Low Dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator that can supply 25V output at up to 100mA current. The regulator features output voltage accuracy of ±1%, low quiescent current of 270μA, low thermal resistance and efficient operation. As such, it is ideal for a wide range of applications including automotive, computers, portable devices, communications systems and point-of-load power systems.

The NCV8509PDW25R2 works on the principle of linear amplification. Here, the input voltage is regulated to a lower voltage level by passing it through an amplifier, which operates in linear region. This regulation is done using a feedback loop that keeps the output voltage at the desired level of accuracy. When the output voltage does not equal the preset voltage level, an error signal is generated and sent to the amplifier input, changing its gain and producing an output voltage at the desired level.

The regulator features an adaptive dropout voltage (Vdrop) control with an internal reference voltage, and can detect over-temperature and over-load conditions, providing extra protection in these situations. It also includes an enable pin to enable/disable the regulator. This enable pin is active when left open or connected to a voltage lower than the input voltage.

The NCV8509PDW25R2 regulator is offered in a space-saving 3mm x 3mm WDFN package making it ideal for portable applications. It is suitable for use in a wide range of operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +85°C.
