Thyristors, also known as semiconductor switches, are advanced semiconductor devices with three terminals (nodes): anode, cathode and gate. Thyristors belong to a category of power switches & electronic components that are used in many fields. The P3500EBL is a unique and robust thyristor, specifically designed for applications that require high reliability and safety.

P3500EBL Application Field and Working Principle

The P3500EBL is mainly used in high voltage and high current applications, specially in medium voltage direct current (MVDC) systems. Examples of its application are solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, wind turbine systems and electrical motor drive systems. The P3500EBL is a bidirectional thyristor device, meaning it can operate under both micro and macro levels of current up to 5000A (access to higher levels is available for testing purposes).

The P3500EBL thyristor has two main functionalities: commutation and protection. It utilizes a triac and an ultrafast diode inside its structure, and features a voltage assisted turn off (VATO) function with integrated gate modulation that helps suppress surge voltage. The VATO clamp voltage is adjustable in the P3500EBL. In addition, the P3500EBL features a logic level input signal of up to 24V for the control of the triac.

Its gate is normally OFF, allowing current flow in either direction. When it receives a gate signal, the thyristor will switch ON and become a low resistance conductor. When it switches ON, the thyristor effectively acts as a short circuit, allowing current to pass easily between the anode and cathode. As long as the gate signal has sufficient current, the thyristor will remain ON. When the gate signal is removed, the thyristor will switch OFF and become a non-conducting device, blocking current flow between the anode and cathode.

The P3500EBL is a reliable and safe semiconductor switch that is widely used in medium voltage direct current systems due to its high current capacity and its ability to provide protection against surge voltages. This thyristor survives most difficult switching operations under high load and can withstand high power during commutation. Its VATO function helps avoid stress on the switching logic, and its adjustable clamp voltage provides additional current protection.
