PCF8563T/F4 is a real-time clock chip developed by NXP Semiconductor. It is an advanced, ultra-low power clock and calendar solution, specifically designed for advanced datasheets. This chip includes an advanced clock calendar that provides seconds, minutes, hours, days, weekdays, months, years information and two programmable time-of-day alarms, with one programmable square-wave output. It also incorporates a temperature-compensated voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) and offers an extremely low operating current (1μA typical).
An advanced clock-calendar IC from the PCF8563 family, PCF8563T/F4 is perfect for applications such as smart meters, wearables, health care and medical, consumer electronics and many consumer, automotive and industrial products. Applications range from simple time-of-day functions to complex stages and alarms. With an extended temperature range of -40°C up to +85°C and its ability to maintain reliable timekeeping even after an extended period in sleep mode, the PCF8563T/F4 helps developers create resilient, maintenance-free designs.
This real-time clock chip can work in two different frequency modes, 32.768 kHz (default) and 45 MHz, using the XT pin when operating in 32.768 kHz external crystal mode. The frequency of the 32.768 kHz crystal is temperature compensated and with low-power RC oscillator variants it can also be used for less accurate but very low-power applications. It also has four independent power-save modes, convenient in battery powered applications.
PCF8563T/F4 includes a number of options for setting time-of-day (TOD) and time-of-alarm (TOA) alarms, and for setting a periodic square wave output. Its operating voltage range is 2.0 to 5.5 V, the operating temperature range is from -40°C to +85°C and the supply current is 1 μA in extended RTC mode. It provides accurate and reliable clock/calendar operation and features both a wide supply voltage including a trickle charger power-up feature, as well as low operating current.
The internal registers of the chip are organized as eight 8-bit registers and one Control Register. Each of the eight registers holds a digital value of a corresponding relationship such as Hours, Minutes, Seconds, Day of Month, Month, Year and Day of Week. The Control Register is used to set various functions such as the Time and Alarm set, the Interrupt control, the Modes and Temperature register operation. The clock runs in two different modes, the default 32.768kHz crystal operation or the 45MHz XT pin mode.
The PCF8563T/F4 provides a wide range of alarm and calendar functions, as well as programmable clock/calendar, automatic switching between summer and winter time, an embedded temperature-compensated voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO), extremely low operating current, and programmable edge-triggered interrupts with special features for periodic operation.
