Working Principle

The PCF8575 is an I/O Expander designed for use with I2C and SMbus serial communication buses. It can be used to provide an additional 16-bit parallel I/O port or multiple I/O ports with up to 8 Mbits of total I/O capacity. The PCF8575 can be configured for input, output or bidirectional operation and has configurable byte and word transfers.

The PCF8575 incorporates sixteen bi-directional IOs. Each of the IOs can be programmed as an input (default) or as an output via the I2C/SMBus interface. The device can act as a single 16-bit I/O port, or it can be configured to operate as two 8-bit ports.

The device has a frequency range of 0 to 400 kHz over which the I2C/SMBus can operate. The device also has programmable pull-up resistors and an internal power-on reset circuit. Output slew rate control can also be enabled, allowing the user to reduce power consumption. Additionally, the device has low operating current and an open-drain interrupt output for status monitoring.

The PCF8575 also supports ESE (Enhanced Serial Interface). ESE is a low-cost, low-power serial interface that enables the PCF8575 to provide enhanced communication services such as real-time interrupt and access to the status of individual outputs. ESE can transfer data at up to 25 MHz.

The PCF8575 supports both I2C and SMbus serial bus protocols and operates on either a 3.3V or 5V power supply. The PCF8575 is designed and optimized for communication in noisy industrial and automotive applications.
