TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are electronic components that are designed to protect sensitive electronic components from damage when confronted with voltage and current transients that are beyond normal operating tolerances. The PGSMAJ54CA M2G is a special kind of TVS diode designed specifically for applications with high EMI and ESD susceptibility, such as automotive, telecommunications, or industrial applications. The PGSMAJ54CA M2G is a low capacitance Uni-directional Breakdown type TVS diode that is RoHS compliant and IEC-61000 compliant. This TVS diode is composed of a Multi-layers Ceramic Capacitor (MLCC) and Glass Passivated PN Junction. It has a maximum working voltage of 5.4V and a 15 Amp peak pulse current rating. Its ESD protection (electrostatic discharge) is rated at 15KV Human Body Model (HBM) and 8KV Air Gap Discharge (AGD). It also offers excellent filtering of Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) up to 30 GHz.

The primary working principle of the PGSMAJ54CA M2G is that it clamps or diverts short duration, high-voltage transients away from the protected circuit. It is designed to limit the maximum voltage that can be applied to a protected circuit by clamping the voltage to the diode’s junction voltage. When a voltage transient exceed the diode’s breakdown voltage (VBR), the diode will conduct and divert the excess energy away from the protected circuit. This is known as “clamping”.
