TVS-Diodes: PGSMAJ8.0CAHM2G Application Field and Working Principle

Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diodes are designed to protect circuits from voltage transients produced through easily identifiable events, such as Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) or surges. PGSMAJ8.0CAHM2G is a silicon avalanche diode (SAD), which is a type of unidirectional TVS diode developed to protect automotive electronics from electrical transients caused by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). Its maximum breakdown voltage reaches 8.0kV, Maximum clamp voltage Vc @ IPP is 2kV and maximum peak pulse current Ipp (10/1000μs) is 5.75A. Additionally, this product is designed according to Rohs, AEC-Q101 Qualified, SAE-J1113 Qualified, and UL E Number S15864-UR Recognized standard.

Application Field

PGSMAJ8.0CAHM2G diode is specifically designed to protect automotive electronics. It provides protection against common electrical transients, and also high voltage (HV) pulses in automotive applications. With its surge withstand capabilities, it prevents components from becoming damaged by these transients. It’s suitable for the protection of electric control units from ESD and HV shocks, CAN transceivers, and external wiring.

Working Principle

TVS diodes work by providing a fast-acting clamp to any voltage increase that exceeds its breakdown voltage. When this occurs, the diode will clamp the voltage close to zero until the transient passes. This provides a path for current to flow, thus protecting the device from electric shock and overvoltage damage. Specifically for PGSMAJ8.0CAHM2G, when the voltage spike exceeds the 8.0kV breakdown voltage, it reduces the voltage to 2kV. When a spike exceeds the breakdown voltage, the current path will be through the diode; once the voltage is below the Rated Standoff Voltage the current flow will stop, and the breakdown voltage will reset.

Furthermore, the avalanche breakdown effect of PGSMAJ8.0CAHM2G helps it to break down at lower voltages and operate at much higher speeds than a standard diode. When an electric field is applied to the diode, it allows the electrons to tunnel through the barrier and accumulate in the region of highest electric field. This further reduces the breakdown voltage, which in turn helps it clamp exceptionally fast.
